About this painting (Painter's words) :
"Cattelan's Horse" - Hand-painted oil on wood art, created in 2017.
My work depicts the entrance hall of The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas.
The resort is an imitation of a castle interior from the Rococo era. A simulacrum representation by definition. This simulacrum made me perceive it as a flat motif- a replication that was designed to attract broad audiences.
My working process includes one flat experience tracing another- beginning from the resort, which claims to represent the Italian-Venetian atmosphere, to the process where I use a tiny picture of this place which is displayed on my smartphone. Thus, I approach the image as a cold-one layered picture.
However, my painting relies on a rigorous traditional method. I use thin layers of paint across a wooden surface with the intention to create depth, that contradicts the flatness and revives the image in the spirit of the 18th-century Rococo roots. Using the warmth of the wood that lies behind those layers and serves as a base for my work, I recreate the qualities of the image that were lost by the simulacrum and screening process. Yet, I expose the absence in order to indicate its fragile state.
Those actions of the painting keep a sense of fragility and tension in the architectural monument; creating fragments that shine out from beneath the brushstrokes, presenting the image on the verge of creation to breakdown.
The horse at the bottom implies it too. As an homage to Maurizio Cattelan's work, "Novecento" (1997), I chose to show the subsequent moments when the horse, which was hung from the ceiling, has fallen down on the ground. Lying on his back with his feet pointing to the sky, it looks as if he is waiting for redemption from above.
